May President’s Insight

Working with SVOSH Chapters Student VOSH chapters are present at almost every optometry school. They are engaged and energic, looking for ways to provide VOSH services, just like VOSH Chapters. It is ideal for VOSH Chapters to develop a relationship with their local SVOSH chapter. Some ways to connect: If you live in a state where there is an optometry school, connect with the SVOSH chapter Ways to connect: invite SVOSH members to local meetings, clinics and activities Here is list of SVOSH chapter leadership: http://vosh.org/chapters/student-chapters/ Look to connect to a nearby optometry school, even if not in the same state Connect with the SVOSH faculty advisor at your nearby optometry school Sponsor events with local SVOSH club Pizza party with a presentation of your VOSH Chapter activities, clinic trips Donate to the SVOSH chapter to support their activities Work with local SVOSH chapter on World Sight Day (WSD) activities. WSD is an annual event to focus global attention on blindness and vision impairment. WSD is held on the second Thursday of October and this year it will be on October 11th. Make it easier for students to participate Find out from the SVOSH chapter when their school breaks are, it is easier for students to participate in trips during academic breaks. Take a look at the SVOSH calendar of breaks: http://vosh.org/chapters/student-vosh-calendar-of-breaks/ Avoid the month of March (and a few months leading up to March) due to National Boards part 1. Many SVOSH students that participate go during their 3rd year and during their 3rd year is when they are preparing for and taking National Boards part 1. Attend VOSH midyear...

May SVOSH Chapter of the Month

SVOSH-IAUPR (PUERTO RICO) May SVOSH Chapter of the Month An amazing level of activity pre and post hurricane Marina, this is a wonderfully active and dedicated SVOSH chapter doing amazing work. Thanks to VOSH and others in the optometric community frames destroyed in Marina were replaced with frames and glasses. Some of the chapter’s Spring highlights are included below sent in by SVOSH Chapter President Adia McDuffey Walker, OD Candidate 2020 at Inter-American University of Puerto Rico School of Optometry: ————– Community missions We performed eye screenings on over 100 shoppers at the Plaza Las Americas Health Fair in San Juan, PR. Our next event was a health fair in a Santurce urbanization in need, Cano Martin Pena where we screened over 50 residents. The last community mission trip of the semester was joining forces with the Puerto Rico Special Olympics. We performed sports vision assessments on over 50 differently-abled athletes from all over the island.  Student events After the SVOSH re-launch, we had 10 new members join. At our first meeting, one of our lucky members won a copy of Bringing the World Into Focus by Michael Listenburger, OD. Thanks to SVOSH chapters and OD’s on Facebook, SVOSH IAUPR received over 800 pairs of donated glasses. Students have started sorting these frames in preparation for our school (SVOSH/LIONS/NOSA) mission trip to Panama City, Panama next October 2018.  The highlight of our semester was guest speaker John Spencer, OD! He inspired our student body with funny stories and realistic ways that we can eradicate world blindness through VOSH International. We received lots of positive feedback from the first year students on how...
