With surgical team partners the Caborca team should feel very proud as a ground breaking mission. The surgical team leader, Dr. Scott M. considered his mission a success even though the surgeries were more mature than the ones typically encountered in the US. The ODs had more difficult refractions in the first few days because of having pre-screened patients, resulting in more specials. The ODs and MDs also had the additional duty of doing pre-op examinations. See report below. |

We were very lucky on the Hermosillo mission to have 2 opticians and 3 for the last two days. We rarely had a back up of patients in the optical area. We seemed to have good patient flow in spite of the small physical environment. I think that our all of our Mexican sponsors did a very good job and I hope we can continue the relationship with all of them. I thank all VOSH members and friends who did not go on a mission this year for the spectacular support and help. You need JavaScript enabled to view it | 3 ODs examined 650 patients, dispensed readers, recycled glasses and sunglasses to almost everyone. We had a general medical and surgical team. One ophthalmologist cared for 30 surgeries mostly cataracts and pterygia and 1 lacerated cornea. We saw the usual eye trauma, glaucoma, neovascular diabetes, allergy, inflammation. The clinic was at a small 20 bed hospital on the outer island of Taveuni, pop 13,000 with minimal medical and eye care. The eye clinic was as usual the busiest. We hope to return to this hospital in Jan 2013 and will be looking for more ODs. |

A VOSH clinic was organized by FUNCER, a non-profit organization in Armenia, Columbia. An SVOSH/SCCO team of 2 US optometrists and 12 SCCO optometry students worked with 4 Columbian optometrists and 8 Columbian students from the Fundacion Universidad del Area Andino (FUAA) at a public health hospital in Armenia, Columbia. The VOSH team examined about 2300 patients in 4.5 days (April 27- March 2, 2011) in Armenia and Barcelona, Columbia. About 200 patients were referred for ophthalomologic care at the public health hospital. Since this mission, the FUAA has applied to establish a student VOSH chapter, the third in Columbia. |

5 students each (20 total) from SCCO, WCO, UCBCO and Midwestern Schools of optometry very soon. We will be working with optometry students from Xochicalco University in Mexicali on May 29 & 30, and in Tijuana, May 31 and June 1. June 2 will be a rest day in Rosarito and Esenada before returning to the border. Cost of the trip is $500 to cover van transport, food, lodging, reading glasses and sunglasses which we will be dispensing on site for free. Patients who need custom Rx glasses will choose a donated frame and lenses will be ordered and dispensed later by the XU students. Patients will be charged only the cost of lenses and local labwork. |
