Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (VOSH)/International is seeking an Executive Director

Position Type: Executive Director, Part Time (Paid) with Flexible Hours (approx. 20 hours/week)
Location: Work from home or office

Mission Statement: The mission of Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (VOSH) / International is to provide the gift of vision and quality eye health to people worldwide.  VOSH facilitates the provision and the sustainability of vision care worldwide for people who can neither afford nor obtain such care.  Our goal is to increase our global impact whenever possible by supporting sustainable eye clinics, optometry schools and optometric educators in areas lacking sufficient eye care.

Job Description: The Executive Director (ED) of VOSH/International (V/I) is responsible for general management, program evaluation and overall operational responsibility of V/I. The ED will be active in areas of administration, communications, finance, systems, and make recommendations regarding timelines and resources needed to achieve V/I’s strategic goals. The ED will be engaged with V/I’s Board members, event coordinators, committee chairs, partners and affiliates and chapters to achieve the stated goals of the V/I Board. The ED is responsible to the Board of Directors and reports directly to the President, or others, as directed by the President, or others, on an as-needed basis.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Planning – implements the organization’s goals outlined in the Strategic Plan and develops annual action plans and benchmarks in conjunction with the Board. Includes attendance and participation in monthly Executive Committee and Board Calls in the evening, and attendance at the Mid Year Meeting in June and Annual Meeting in October.
  • Director of Information/Conduit of information- Fields and/or responds to all emails and inquiries. Also facilitates and directs inquiries to appropriate person(s) within the organization to respond.
  • Fundraising and Fiscal Management – together with the Development and Fundraising Committee, develops, manages, and implements the fundraising and financial strategies of the organization, assists as needed to effectively research, write, submit, and manage grants and other funding proposals to support the financial stability of the organization, works with the Executive Committee to develop an annual budget for approval by the Board; oversees the management of all funds consistent with the organization’s accounting system.   
  • Board/Staff/Volunteer Leadership and Management – engages, motivates, develops, grows the Board of Directors and volunteer leadership team; hires, supervises and evaluates volunteer staff at the point when organization is ready to do so; coordinates work with the Board committee leadership, volunteers and partner organizations.
  • Develops and ensures effective systems for operation and infrastructure of the organization to track progress and scaling of the organization.  Regularly evaluates program components and services to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the board, funders, and other constituents.  Leverages successes for increased funding and develops collaborative partnerships to connect successes to services. Systems and infrastructure includes, but isn’t limited to: IT systems, online and web management, fundraising, Board systems.
  • Program Development and Events Management – develops, implements and supervises programs, events, and services that are consistent with the organization’s Mission and Strategic Plan.
  • Community Relations, Collaborations, and Communications – develops effective working relationships and collaborative partnerships with the optometric and non profit community. Works wit Communications Committee to develop communication platforms via social media, e-newsletters, website, and other communication vehicles to promote VOSH’s  vision, mission, programs, and services.
  • Conducts all business at the highest standard of integrity ensuring that all activities are legal and ethical.
  • Other duties as needed or required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (preferably in business, management, non-profit administration, human services or other relevant field) or equivalent years of education/experience. At least 1 year management experience, preferably in a nonprofit organization.
  • Experience in and/or knowledge of the optometric community preferred, but not required.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to positively motivate, engage and develop a board of directors, staff and volunteers and build consensus to move the organization forward.
  • Outstanding written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong planning, organizational and analytical skills.
  • Visionary and innovative thinker.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with all sectors of the community, the Board of Directors, other organizations, and volunteer staff.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Google Drive, social media, web communications and platforms.  Familiarity with fundraising, membership, and accounting systems preferred.
  • Development and Fundraising experience

Environment and Working Conditions: Work from home or office with flexible hours arrangements.  Primarily computer work. Must participate in monthly board and executive committee calls during the evenings. Must attend Mid Year meeting in June and Annual Meeting in October.   

Benefits: Pay is approx. $1,700/month depending on experience. Paid as a consultant and will receive a 1099 form at the end of each year.  PT hours (approximately/up to 20 hours per week) with a flexible work environment (work from your home or office) and flexible hours arrangements.  As this is a part-time, 1099 position, there are no health/dental/401K or other benefits offered.
