VOSH-Texas: Chapter of the Month-May 2017

VOSH-Texas has been selected as the VOSH May Chapter of the Month! For it’s extraordinary work at the Guerrero Clinic in Chihuahua, Mexico. Read on and check out the video which includes much about VOSH itself and its contributions at http://texasvosh.org/clinicvideo.html From VOSH-Texas: Vosh Texas for its commitment to the Guerrero, Chihuahua, Mexico clinic. This clinic was established in 1989, built out its own permanent facility and brings many disciplines to care for a very unserved population. Volunteers come to 3 or 4 VOSH sponsored clinics each year where they provide over half the indigent care in the State of Chihuahua. Our just completed March clinic saw volunteers from Mass., New Mexico, West Virginia, Alabama, Texas, the Dominican Republic and Mexico work beautifully together. At any given clinic, we may provide Plastic Surgery, OBGYN, General Medicine, Dentistry, Ophthalmology, Fabricating and dispensing Opticians as well as Optometry. We have equipped 9 exam rooms, three dental suites, and a surgery that can accommodate 5 eye surgeons simultaneously. We encourage SVOSH participation and have had optometry students from 5 different optometry colleges attend where they get invaluable first hand experiences.  Volunteer, Guerrero Clinic Clinic Video The Guerrero clinic provides eye and dental care to the indigent population of the State Of Chihuahua and Mexico....

President’s Insight: One Week Teaching Opportunity!

One week teaching opportunity! VOSH is pleased to be a partner with the Asociacion Latinoamericana de Optometras y Opticos– ALDOO to collaborate with schools of optometry in Latin America.  ALDOO wants to encourage the schools to join and collaborate with VOSH.   One initiative from the VOSH-ALDOO collaboration is to find Optometric Educators in the US and other countries to volunteer to do one full week of lectures/workshops at the schools that form SVOSH chapters in Latin America.  We have had a few of these collaborations this past year that that have had excellent success. Several Latin American schools have expressed interest in this program. The main areas of need of several schools that ALDOO has queried are Low Vision and pediatrics.  However, we anticipate anterior Segment, contact lenses, and disease will be very helpful in the future also.  A one week course may be designed as ~ 12 hours of lecture (mornings) and four 3-hour workshops (afternoons).  Since this is a new program, we are very flexible on dates, just mindful of when it would be feasible for the volunteers.  The local schools provide room and board of the guest lecturer, as well as providing an interpreter, if needed.  If interested, please contact VOSH Director Marcela Frazier, OD, MPH, FAAO at mgfrazier@uabmc.edu...

VOSH-Santa Cruz-Québec: Chapter of the Month-April 2017

VOSH-Santa Cruz-Québec Chapter of the Month, for extraordinary humanitarian accomplishment. Read about the history and the numbers of patients served below as submitted by this amazingly active VOSH Chapter.  It is with great pride that VOSH Santa Cruz announces to have received over 200,000 patients in more than 54 missions in 8 different countries offering a free eye exam and a pair of glasses since 1999. We produce more than 8,000 pairs of new glasses in our workshop which are then given to the poor. Our warehouse of 4,000 square feet, enables us to select, analyze, and class over 15,000 pairs of glasses which we bring to each mission. As well, we distribute over 150,000 pairs of glasses to other groups. More than 100 volunteers help us to achieve all this work. We receive most of our glasses thanks to various Lions Clubs in Québec and Ontario. For the past 10 years, most of the OD students from Montreal University and from Waterloo participate in our missions, helping the ODs, opticians, and volunteers in our various missions to South America, Europe, and Africa. We also have help from OD students f rom ICO and Brisbane, Australia. In 2016, VOSH Santa Cruz was the first humanitarian group to be received by the Republic of Moldova, one of the poorest countries in Europe, and we are returning April 28th...
